Dare To Care

Go Into Hard Places

—— Dr. James R. Kok

In The Miracle of Kindness, the final chapter is entitled “Moving Out of Your Comfort Zone”. I make the point in the book that we must deliver Care and Kindness everywhere we go. This almost always involves giving of some of ourselves or giving up something, even if it is only our sense of comfortableness or control. We must be willing to step into areas of discomfort or risky territory to deliver aid and encouragement to others. Unfortunately, it is easy to avoid situations where we could be Ambassadors of Kindness. It is far too easy to stay comfortably ensconced in our comfort zones. Consider this true story from “Mary” that illustrates this concern:

Dear Jim:
I’ve been remembering an experience I had with my former church at the time of my marital separation. I had moved from “Bible Church” to another at the time of my separation because Bible Church was experiencing some conflict at the time. I found myself emotionally incapable of dealing with the tension in the church at the same time that there was also tension in my marriage. I had been at Bible Church for 12 years and my husband and I had been members of the choir there for 10 years. The choir was our family within the family.

Our daughter Kim, was still in the choir when Don and I separated, and after a period of time she shared the sad news with the choir as a prayer request. The choir director talked about it for about 10 minutes, stating that he was certain I would welcome their reaching out to me. The next morning Kim called to ask if my phone was ringing off the hook.
